Rojales and the River Segura: a walk through its water heritage
Rojales is inseparable from the River Segura. The river crosses the centre of town, but its importance is easier to understand by looking at the stonework beside it. A weir, irrigation channel, waterwheel and ashlar bridge form one connected piece of civic engineering.
Together these structures explain how water was raised, directed and shared across the huerta. They also make a compact heritage walk which starts close to the centre of Rojales and follows the river rather than a conventional trail of grand buildings.
A landscape made by irrigation
The Vega Baja is a low, fertile plain. Agriculture here depended on controlling the Segura and moving its water into a network of channels. Rojales Town Council traces this system back to Andalusi irrigation, with later works refining it over several centuries.
The town's hydraulic ensemble brought those parts together. Its principal elements span the early modern and modern periods, so it is best understood as an evolving working system rather than a monument built at one moment.
The weir and irrigation channels
The azud is a low stone weir across the river. Its purpose was not to create a deep reservoir. It raised the water level enough to direct part of the flow towards the mouths of the main irrigation channels and the waterwheel.
The council's heritage guide describes the curved ashlar structure as about 40 metres long and 10 metres wide. Seen from the riverbank, its modest height helps make sense of the engineering: water passes over it while a controlled share enters the irrigation system.
The waterwheel
The noria lifted water from river level towards higher ground on the right bank. The present large metal wheel belongs to the later development of the site, while substantial stone defences protected the mechanism from the Segura's floods.
It is the relationship between wheel, channel and fields which matters. The wheel was not a decorative mill feature. It formed a bridge between the river and land which gravity alone could not irrigate.
The Carlos III bridge
The stone bridge joined the two sides of a town repeatedly exposed to flooding. Its three arches and cutwaters give it a solid, practical character. From the bridge and nearby paths, the components of the hydraulic system can be read together against the low landscape of the Vega Baja.
Planning a short visit
- Begin near the centre of Rojales and approach the river on foot.
- Look downstream and upstream before moving between the bridge, weir and waterwheel.
- Allow time to follow the riverbank and notice where the channels leave the main flow.
- Keep away from wet masonry and the water's edge after rain or when the river is high.
The route is short enough to combine with the Cuevas del Rodeo and the wider Rojales place guide. Conditions beside a working river can change, so local signs should take priority during a visit.
