Moved To Spain, What To Do With My Pension?

Moving to Spain with a pension: the questions to resolve first

en

Moving to Spain does not turn a pension into one simple transfer decision. State pensions, workplace schemes and personal pensions can have different payment, tax, currency and beneficiary rules. Residency date and nationality also affect which official guidance applies.

List each pension separately

Record the provider, scheme type, normal pension age, current value or entitlement, beneficiary nomination and contact details. Ask whether payments can go to a Spanish account, what exchange route is used and how address or life-certificate requests are handled.

State pensions cross systems

A person who worked in more than one country may need each country's authority to assess contributions. UK State Pension claims from Spain and Spanish contributory pension claims have official routes. Do not pay an introducer merely to obtain a government form.

Tax residence comes before a tax answer

Where pension income is taxed can depend on Spanish residence, the pension type and the applicable double-taxation treaty. Government-service pensions may be treated differently from private pensions. Obtain regulated cross-border tax advice before taking a lump sum, transferring a scheme or changing withdrawals.

Protect the administration

  • Tell providers about the move through verified contact channels.
  • Keep copies of residence, identity and payment records.
  • Respond to official proof-of-life requests before the deadline.
  • Reject cold calls promising tax-free access or guaranteed returns.

Separate currency from investment risk

A pension paid in sterling and spent in euros changes value with the exchange rate even when the pension itself is unchanged. Compare regulated payment and conversion costs. Do not move the underlying pension merely to solve a routine currency-transfer problem, and never grant remote access to a caller offering to arrange it.

This is general information, not financial or tax advice. Pension transfers can be irreversible and should be assessed by appropriately regulated professionals in the relevant countries.
